The First Family has chosen the Mansion’s Convex Mirror as the official 2022 Keepsake Ornament. This mirror, which is believed to be from the early 1800’s and original to the Mansion, is also called a candlelight mirror or girandole mirror. Before the 1980’s restoration, it hung above the Great Hall fireplace and now hangs in the Sleigh Bedroom on the third floor. Convex mirrors served two functions, the first was to push light around the room when the candles were lit and the second was for the hosts to be able to see all of their guests from where they stood. This allowed the hosts to make sure guests had plenty of food and drink.
